:: [  SVVS  NATIONAL  AND   INTERNATIONAL  INFORMATION  ASSISTANCE SERVICE  ] ::

The SVVS Website currently receives approximately 500,000 hits a year and the "HELP PAGE" is internationally the most visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as new, and owning Vintage or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle  -   These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries received, and information that we have provided.  While page is being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed,  cars are in year order:

Please note that if you are submitting an enquiry, we will assume that we have your permission
that we can publish the photo, background story to it, and your name and country calling from.

Cinema screen grab taken from the British film 'Austin Festival Review' where the cars are being investigated by IMCDB. This is a promotional documentary made by Associated British Pathe during the year of the Festival of Britain. Questioned as not looking much like an Austin?  --  Because its not. Probably in  the film as indicative of that Britain was held back in automobile development by the Red Flag Act, which was repealed 1896. Vehicle looks very much like a cca1895 Benz Velocipede.

Another picturesque period photo sent to us by
Kelvin Smith  (UK) who is carrying out research on his local village of Oxborough, Norfolk, and would like to identify the cars in the attached photograph taken in about 1960 in Oxborough, Norfolk, but the car is clearly much older.   -- Just a bit, only about 55 years older! Our Ariejan Boss suggests this is a cca 1904 Darracq 8HP Tonneau. The body could be a rear entrance Tonneau or  Swing Seat Tonneau, very difficult to tell  from small photo.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1920s Ford Model T Special
Another lovely photo received from Juha Kaitanen (Finland) saying "Here is another photo of the car of which we are not able to identify. Could you help us?"  -- This is indeed quite a difficult one and eyes are drawn to the German NAG or Stoewer radiator. However, the car has a tranverse front spring and long axle stubs, which put us in mind of the car behind it. We think this is a 1920s Ford Model T Special with lowered bodywork / chassis, and dropped and relocated behind the front spring.

Probably 1920s Ford Model T Special

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:Village scene early 1930s
A fuzzy photo sent to us by previous contributor Robert Broadbent (UK) asking if we could identify vehicles outside The Magpie public house on Magpie Green in Wortham, Suffolk. He is guessing that the vehicles are both Fords, and that picture dates from late 1920s or the 1930s.
--  Regretfully the photo is far too indistinct to be able to pick out details which would help in identification. Van could be a cca 1928 Ford AA Van (or Bedford or Chevrolet) and car cca 1928 Austin Seven.  Early 1930s.

A not very helpful photo received from Barry Wainwright (UK)
"found in a family archive given to my mother (an avid genealogist) and she thinks it shows her Aunt Maud and Uncle Will. Determining the maximum age of the car would help. Another relative recalls that just after WW1 they bought a war surplus Rolls Royce at an auction. Is this a Silver Ghost?" --  Car was built cca 1911/12 but is not a Rolls or big Austin, nor is enough visible to help to identify. Tall rad, so poss FIAT ??

Unknown cca1911 Tourer

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:Unidentified Motorcycle Combination
A bunch of interesting photos received from Marcel Wagner (UK) obtained on a visit to family in South Africa. His
grandmother is in the side-car in both cases. The man in that picture is probably her first husband that they have no photos of. Number plate TP4 is from South Africa. 'T' stood for Transvaal and 'P' for Pretoria. Presumably this was the fourth vehicle registered in the capital city?  -- The photo is regrettably far too blurry to be able to pick out details which would help.

A bunch of interesting photos received from Marcel Wagner (UK) obtained on a visit to family in South Africa. His
grandmother is in the side-car in both cases.  -- The photo is regrettably far too indistinct to be able to pick out details which would help in identification. Our Motorcycle Experts noted the sidecar is  on the right and that the motorcycle looks distinctly American, particularly  the handlebars.
