:: [  SVVS  NATIONAL  AND   INTERNATIONAL  INFORMATION  ASSISTANCE SERVICE  ] ::

The SVVS Website currently receives approximately 500,000 hits a year and the "HELP PAGE" is internationally the most visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as new, and owning Vintage or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle  -   These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries received, and information that we have provided.  While page is being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed,  cars are in year order:

Please note that if you are submitting an enquiry, we will assume that we have your permission
that we can publish the photo, background story to it, and your name and country calling from.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1903 Mercedes 18/28hp RE Tonneau
Lovely period photo sent to us by Robin Blythe-Lord (UK) who is the president of a local history society in Plymouth. Photo states "Turnchapel 1800+. Outside Boringdon Terrace. First bus to leave village"  which is quite inaccurate. Poster says 'Vote for Mildmay' on the side. Francis Midway was a local MP continuously from 1885 to 1922.-- Seems lived at Fleete House, Hoberton, Devon and was Baron Midmay of Fleete.  The car, not a bus, is cca1903 Mercedes 18/28hp RE Tonneau.

1903 Mercedes 18/28hp RE Tonneau

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1907 Vulcan TT Racer
Great photo sent to us by Roger Packman (UK) asking if we could help with identification of the car. Looks like it could be an early racer or 'special' - Apart from AA badge and number plate there are not a lot of clues.  -- Fortunately one of our experts advised this is the Southport manufactured 1907 Vulcan TT Works Racer which, amongst many others, had ran out of petrol and time on lap 5 due strict fuel allowance regulations.  From contemporary photos, the driver is Thomas Rimmer.

1907 Vulcan TT Racer

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:Probably 1909 BSA 15'20 Tourer
Photograph posted on a New Zealand website Transpress and being investigated by our Mark Dawber out there, showing trams in the High Street in Colchester UK. What is the car? --  Lots of discussion amongst our experts as to it being a possible Enfield, Benz, Humber, Belsize, but the name that kept cropping up was cca 1909 BSA 15'20 Tourer. While it very probably is a BSA, the difficulty has been that a lot of BSAs of that period had the starting handle going  through the rad.  But not this one?

Probably 1909 BSA 15'20 Tourer

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:Probably c1913 Stoewer C5 Tourer
Number of interesting photos sent to us by Andrew Kostin from Moscow (Russia) who is a collector of old photos. Can we identify this photo from a fellow collector of a vehicle photographed  in the Great War?  -- This one is very difficult as the bodywork and the bonnet appear Teutonic and are similar to other cars of the period. We do think however that it is a cca 1913 Stoewer Doppelphaeton. Scuttle sidelights suggest the C5, or the C2.  Stoewers were made in Stettin  (now Szczecin, west Poland).

Probably c1913 Stoewer C5 Doppelphaeton

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1918 Ford Model T Touring
A bunch of interesting photos received from Marcel Wagner (UK) obtained as  a result of a visit to family in South Africa: 4 photos of one car (he thinks) and one of another --  Actually three cars. This photo is of an American car built in Detroit but sold from Canada. Dating is a bit difficult because people are hiding the identification features but rounded bonnet and non-detachable wheels suggest this is a cca 1918 Ford Model T.   S Africa  started assembling  Model Ts  but not until 1924.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: c1920 Graf & Stift VK1 Phaeton
Another fascinating photograph from our regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania) who is interested in old cars of Romania.  Do we know what this is?   --  Difficult one. Thoughts that it may be Austro Daimler, but not. Then advice from Florin that it may be a Graf & Stift. I doubted it was either; but Craig Gillingham from Melbourne Australia via AACA provided a picture of a cca 1920 Graf & Stift  VK1  Double  Phaeton, - which seemed to match.  VK1 was 1920-1.

c1920 Graf & Stift VK1 Phaeton

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1921 Auto-Carriers 12HP Two Seater
Rather grainy and damaged photo sent to us by Ian Petrie (UK) of his Grandfather in his car in Scotland in 1928 which nobody has been able to  identify. A poor quality scan of the original, no longer available. A family mystery they would be excited to unravel. -- Bit of repair to the photo reveals that it is a sporty cca 1921 Auto Carriers 12 HP Two Seater. Company soon after became AC cars and the car became 16hp. Went bust 1929 and again 1996,  but is renowned for the  Shelby Cobra.

1921 Auto-Carriers 12HP Two-Seater

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1922 Coventry Premier Two-Seater
Another fascinating photo sent to us by our Singer expert Simon Bishop (UK) asking for our confirmation.  -- Very unusual car built by Premier Cycle Co in Coventry who later made motorcycles, then cyclecars. Name change in 1914 to Coventry Premier and made three-wheelers. Four wheerer developed but WW1 intervened. Company bought by Singer 1921 who added a wheel and and sold it as a 1921/2 Coventry Premier 8HP Two-Seater.  Singer 10 badged as CP,-and C.Premier gone by 1924.

1922 Coventry Premier 8HP V Twin Two-Seater

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1927 Steyr Typ XII Landaulette Taxi
Cinema screen grab taken from French TV Series 'Arsène Lupin'  made in 1971 to 1974, where the cars are being investigated by IMCDB. Story is about Arsène Lupin, a clever gentleman thief who was either stealing paintings, recuing damsels in distress or as detective against other criminals.  --  The car was made in Steyr, Austria. Canvas top to driver's position and solid section behind with luggage rack on the roof, and open convertible back. This is a cca1927 Steyr Typ XII Landaulette Taxi.

1927 Steyr Typ XII Landaulette Taxi

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1927 Chevrolet National ABTouring
Another fascinating photograph from our regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania) who is interested in old cars of Romania.  Do we know what this is?   --  Photographed in the town of Taragoviste in the Dambovita province, this car seems to be transporting a military gentleman. The car is a newish American but the radiator badge appears to have fallen off and the front wing has been welded. The badge shape is a  cca 1927  Chevrolet  National  AB Touring.

1927 Chevrolet National ABTouring

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1928 Ford Model A Phaeton
A bunch of interesting photos received from Marcel Wagner (UK) obtained as  a result of a visit to family in South Africa: 4 photos of one car (he thinks) and one of another --  Actually three cars. This photo is of an American car built in Detroit and was the direct follow-on to the Model T Ford. They seem to have had later two Model As from this same period. From the lack of door handles this one  has to be an early cca 1928 Ford Model A Phaeton. His other photo of the A has door handles.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1929 Ford Model A Fordor Touring
A bunch of interesting photos received from Marcel Wagner (UK) obtained as  a result of a visit to family in South Africa: 4 photos of one car (he thinks) and one of another --  Actually three cars. This photo is of an American car built in Detroit and was the follow-on to the Model T Ford. It was made as far apart as England, Argentina, Australia... and Russia, 1927 to 1931. This one, which has a missing badge, is a cca 1929 Ford Model A Fordor Sedan. By 1931 4,858,644 Model A had been made.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1929 Ford Model A Fordor Touring
A bunch of interesting photos received from Marcel Wagner (UK) obtained as  a result of a visit to family in South Africa: 4 photos of one car (he thinks) and one of another --  The photo above is of his 19 year old uncle with the Model A on his last visit home before joining the war in Egypt in 1941. The photo right appears to show the same car but the person is his Mother. The photo is similarly dated 1941 so may have been taken  at  same time.  Unlikely they  had two  1929 Ford Model As?

1928 Ford Model A Fordor

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1929 Buick 116 Four Door Sedan
Cinema screen grab taken from French TV Series 'Arsène Lupin'  made in 1971 to 1974, where the cars are being investigated by IMCDB. Story is about Arsène Lupin, a clever gentleman thief who was either stealing paintings, recuing damsels in distress or as detective against other criminals.  --  Difficult blurry photo. Bulge visible on bonnet and rad. The car is smallish and was made in America. This would seem to be 1929 Buick Six Series 116 Model 27 Four Door Sedan, on optional wire wheels.

1929 Buick Six Series 116 Model 27 Four Door Sedan

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1931 MG 18'80 Speed Mk1
Intriguing photo sent to us by our Publicity Officer Tony Rusell (UK) of car which belonged to the father of one of his National Trust colleagues Suzy Miller. Father was a motor sport enthusiast in the forties and fifties. Suzy had a packet of photos of her dad rallying in the 1950's --  Will admit thinking first it was an Aston and consulted our expert Keith Piper who said no, and his friend advised probably MG. Tiny rear door and metal body advised it was  cca  1931  MG  18'80  Mk1  Speed  Sports.

1931 MG 18'80 Speed Mk1

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1931 Aero 500 Roadster
Number of interesting photos sent to us by Andrew Kostin from Moscow (Russia) who is a collector of old photos. Can we identify this photo of a vehicle photographed with late 1940 Soviet servicemen.  -- This car seems to have been liberated from fellow Slavs who at that time had not yet become communist. This car was made in Prague Czechoslovakia by an aircraft manufacturer and was a cca 1931 Aero 500 Roadster. It  was  powered by a  500 cc  single  cylinder two-stroke.

1931 Aero 500 Roadster

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1935 Horch 830 Cabriolet
Number of interesting photos sent to us by Andrew Kostin from Moscow (Russia) who is a collector of old photos. Can we identify this photo of a vehicle photographed just after WW2? Two Soviet officers, one NCO and a in front of ... an Audi???  -- Not quite, German car, with the Auto Union logo, formed 1932 which encompassed DKW, Horch, Audi and Wanderer. This is a cca 1935 Horch 830 Cabriolet. Just possible to see the letter 'H' on the front hubcap.  Modern Audi name resurrected 1965.

Can we identify this photo of a vehicle photographed with two Soviet officers and NCO, late WW2.  -- A car resulting from the fusion of Daimler and Benz in 1926 and resulting in some wonderful automobiles. This one was developed in 1931 at the cheaper end having a 1.7L 6 cylinder sidevalve (front located: vor) engine capable of 55mph and is a cca 1936 Mercedes Benz 170V Saloon.

Can we identify this photo of a vehicle photographed  just after WW2?  -- Lady looks like prototype for the Janes Bond 007 vilain Rosa Klebb ! Another German car but under the American ownership of General Motors. This is a cca 1937 Opel Olympia Limousine (saloon). The Olympia was made 1935 to 1940. Dating is from the  angled  airvents  on bonnet  and inboard  headlamps.

Number of interesting photos sent to us by Andrew Kostin from Moscow (Russia) who is a collector of old photos. Started with knitting machines 1881 and  into lorries 1915 when 1000 made by end WW1. Not a 4RL as more bars on rad, this one looks like a cca 1938 Vomag 3LV or LR. Went bust 1932. Reconstituted made Panzer tanks. Closed by Russians 1945.

1938 Vomag 3LV_3.5 Ton Lorry

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1939 Reanault Vivaquatre Fourgon
Photograph posted on the PreWarCar website by Angelo van de Rijt asking for identification of this vehicle parked many years ago in the back of an abandoned bodyshop. --  This is from a range of French Renault  vehicles built between 1932 and 1939. This is a very rare cca 1939 Vivaquatre Fourgon (Van), probably the long wheelbase model, having a four cylinder 2,383cc engine, three speed manual. Long wheelbase  Vivaquatre  vehicles were used as Taxis until end of  1950s.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1951 DeSoto Custom Four Door Sedan
Number of interesting photos sent to us by Andrew Kostin from Moscow (Russia) who is a collector of old photos. Can we identify this photo of a vehicle photographed in the USSR in the 12960s.  -- Does help to have the name of the make just above the grille. The mascot is the head of  Spanish explorer  Hernando  de  Soto.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:Unidentified Sports Car
Number of interesting photos sent to us by Andrew Kostin from Moscow (Russia) who is a collector of old photos. Can we identify this vehicle photoed in USSR in the 1950s?
-- Lots of us have had a go at this one but nobody has come up with a definitive answer. We thought that it may be one of the 1930s Czech sportscar makers. Despite the fact that the car looks very professionally made, our thoughts are it could be a home made special. The Rudge wheels with eared hubcaps are odd.  Mystery !

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:Unidentified Sports Car
Number of interesting photos sent to us by Andrew Kostin from Moscow (Russia) who is a collector of old photos. Can we identify this vehicle photoed in Leningrad USSR in the 1950s?
Is it a Tatra? -- The photo is regrettably too blurry to be able to pick out details which would help in identification. It seems to be a sports car with a convertible top, making the roof very angular. Not possible to see the radiator and lights, and body seems coachbuilt  with enclosed rear wheel.  Mystery !
