:: [ SVVS NATIONAL
AND INTERNATIONAL INFORMATION ASSISTANCE
SERVICE ] ::
The SVVS Website currently
receives approximately 500,000
hits a year and the "HELP
PAGE" is internationally the most
visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians
and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to
identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification
of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as
new, and owning Vintage photo or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our
associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle -
These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries
received, and information that we have provided. While page is
being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed, cars are in year
order:

DEEPLY SAD ANNOUNCEMENT: JOHN
WARBURTON
It is with great personal sadness that I
have to advise that our very good friend John Warburton has died. John
has been a stalwart and almost daily advisor to the SVVS Help Pages
since 2000. John was the 'Wise Sage' mentioned in many identifications
for some 20 years since. He was an auto-historian extraordinaire having
been on the Veteran Car Club (London-Brighton Run) car dating committee
and the Editor of various magazines including the venerable Vintage
Sports Car Club Bulletin. He has been a regular contributor of learned
articles on largely obscure car makes to The Automobile.
Apart from his encyclopedic knowledge of cars, he was a world authority
on Star cars, one of which he was an owner. We who had the
privilege to know him will miss him deeply. A widower, he leaves
partner Julie, children and grandchildren.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1880
Vasescu Steamer
Our Publicity Officer Tony Russell
(UK) wondered if we knew what this one was, got from a friend abroad? --
Tony's daughter-in-law to-be is Romanian
! Dumitru Vasescu was the first Romanian to build a car and
according to local lore in 1880, but while a student in Paris. It was
coal fired steamer
with tubular boiler and water tank under seat. Had
metal wire wheels at front, wood rimmed steel spoked rears, all solid
rubber tyres, wood block brakes. Dating disputed, and possibly wrong
picture.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1901
Decauville 10HP Tonneau
Lovely photo received from John
Thompson (UK)
showing Florence Moon, great grandfather's
Aunt, reputedly 'first female driver in London' married twice and
lived London, then Bexley. --
Registration was A1642 issued by London CC
in early 1904 so possibly while married to John Bush, pre divorce in
1908. The car was built pre-registrations and is a
c1901
Decauville 10HP Tonneau. This is a 'VCC
Dated' car which has survived, and has been seen on a relatively
recent "Brighton Run" !

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1903
Darracq 8HP Tonneau
Another lovely photo from Andrew Moore
(UK) taken in
1916 in Lincolnshir, England. A gentleman from the village was asking
if anybody could identify it? --
The picture of the car is quite small but is just possible to make out
the registration as DO 23 which is Holland County Council, now
Lincolnshire. Registrations started 12/03 so this would be 1904. The
car is a British but Paris built Darracq and has been confirmed by our
Ariejan Bos as cca
1904 Darracq Tonneau, 1 cyl. 8HP.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1906
Vauxhall 12-14 Touring Car
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) was
interested in the vehicle posted by John Davis apparently
taken in UK. Is this a Vauxhall on the roads
of Norfolk? -- Registration
seems Hertford CC 1906. This is quite a big car made by an ironworks
originally based in Vauxhall Road, London. This model was introduced at
Olympia in 1905, this being one of the later 12 made after the move to
Luton and is a cca
1906 Vauxhall 12-14HP Tourer, with a
three cylinder engine of 2,445 cc.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1906
Wolseley 10HP Tonneau
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) was
interested in the vehicle posted by John Davis apparently
taken in UK. Is this a Wolseley and which
model? -- Registrationis
C 424 is West Riding Yorkshire c1906. Indeed a Wolseley and it is a medium
sized car for the age. Wolseley made quite a range of cars in the
1901-1906 era, when Wolseley was biggest UK car manufacturer. They are
a little difficult to tell apart, but from chainguard is a
cca 1906 Wolseley 10HP Tonneau.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1906
Darracq 20'32 Tourer
Lovely photo of relatively unusual car from
Sally Unwin (UK) showing
her GG Grandparents in their new car in the 1900s in Barton on
Humber. Can we identify car and colour? --
No on the colour but ladies' dustcoats were similar to 'Columbo's mac',
so relatively light. Reg BE ##1 is Lindsey CC. Curious
parallel-strip-edged radiator. Our Messrs Bos and Warburton have
determined this is the bigger Anglo-French cca
1906 Darracq 20'32 Tourer, four
cylinder, aimed at American market.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1906
Talbot 24HP Tourer
One of a number of interesting period photos
posted on the John Davies (UK)
asking for identification and suggesting
it may perhaps be a Brasier?
-- From the
flat top of the bonnet, did not seem a Brasier to me. Looked much more like a Talbot
but as it was a chain drive, perhaps not. Our Ariejan Bos advises
probably one of the first real Talbots
in 1906. Chain drive was used only on the larger models. This one does
not look their biggest 35HP, so is probably a
cca 1906 Talbot 24HP Tourer.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1907
Gladiator 12'14 Limousine
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) was
interested in the vehicle posted by Tomoyuki Jnbo apparently
taken in Osaka in 1920. Radiator is not one he recognised. The car is
probably about 1910? -- Very
unusual Anglo-French car so not a common radiator. This is a cca
1907 Gladiator 12'14 Open Drive Limousine,
or the bigger 20'30, Originated as Cycles et Automobiles Gladiator in
Paris, then Gladiator-Clement, involved Darracq and taken over 1909 by
Vinot & Deguingand.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1908
De Dion Bouton BG Tonneau
Cinema screen grab taken from a
French-Canadian-German television serieses "Les Faucheurs de
marguerites" (The daisy Reapers) made in 1974, and where cars are
being investigated by IMCDB? Early aviation through a fictitious
aviator. -- This
is a French car made in Paris by company that started out making early
steamers and became biggest world car manufacturer, but was gone by
1932. This is a 1 cylinder 942cc c1908
De Dion Bouton BG 8HP Tonneau,
one of seven models offered.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1912
Straker Squire 15'20 Two-Seater
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) was
interested in the vehicle posted by John Davis apparently
taken in Norfolk Uk but no other information.
-- Shame
registration not visible to help in dating. Very interesting
car made by man who started in steam commercials in 1893. Imported
petrol cars from Continent and made own Schamrock car in 1907. This is a cca
1912 Straker Squire 15'20 HP Two-Seater.
Made aero engines in Bristol in WW1, and stopped making cars 1926.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:Probably
c1912 Dealaunay Bellville
Puzzling
photo received from Lars Magnuson (Sweden)
trying to identify grandfather
Johan Edward Magnuson's car. Family says one of first Swedish driving licenses.
Photo likely Stockholm, pre 1925. -- Ariejan
Bos thinks it is a cca
1912 Opel Open Drive Limousine
but I am finding some inconsistencies. Bonnet
is round with very high hinge, hoops, and separate opening lid. Detachable rims could be Continental.
Subsequent
information suggests cca1911 Dealaunay
Bellville 12'28 Limousine taxi.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1913
Siddeley Deasy 18'24 Tourer
Batch of interesting photos received from
Philip Perry (UK) all
featuring his late grandfather who was liveried attendant and chauffeur
to landed gentry in Worcestershire. On this photo he is in a
possibly Siddeley-Deasy, which on one occasion he
drove up to Inverness in 24 hours! --
No registration visible for correct dating but, quite correct, this
seems a cca
1913 Siddeley Deasy 18'24
Tourer, or the perhaps the 24'30. Was Deasy Motor Co, became Armstrong Siddeley 1919 to 1960.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1913
Rolls Royce Silver Ghost
Batch of interesting photos received from
Philip Perry (UK) all
featuring his late grandfather who was liveried attendant and chauffeur
to landed gentry in Worcestershire. On this photo he is one of
the four liveried attendants by a Rolls Royce, which may be a Silver
Ghost with bodywork by Barker Coachbuilders. --
Quite correct, if reg is E 1791, then is a
Silver Ghost
chassis
2515 of July 1913, fitted with a Barker landaulette body, sold via
Midland agent to C A Palmer of Birmingham.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1913
Franklin Model G Touring
Unusual but lovely period photo posted on
the Don Dunne website asking
for identification and year of car shown. Is it a Renault?
-- The coal scuttle bonnet is indeed reminiscent
of the French Renault but it has a grille on the facia. It also has a
1913 Oregon plate suggesting USA location, - and car. Franklin made air cooled cars
with circular radiators until 1911. This one is a
cca
1913
Franklin Model G Touring Car, with four cylinder 25HP 3.2L air cooled
engine and 3 gears. Closed in 1934.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1915
Swift 15.9HP Two-Seater
Batch of interesting photos received from
Philip Perry (UK) all
featuring his late grandfather who was liveried attendant and chauffeur
to landed gentry in Worcestershire. On this photo his whole
family is enjoying an outing in one of the 'bosses' cars? --
Thanks to the joint efforts of Messrs Bos and Warburton this has been
identified as bigger cca
1915 Swift 15.9HP Two-Seater
introduced October 1913. Noticable is the fuel filler tight up to
the windscreen. Curious number of louvres?

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1915
Saxon S2 Schutte Scout Car
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) was
interested in the vehicle from a Lancaster UK page but relating to Lancaster Pa in the US.
-- Car
is interesting because it is a specially bodied cca
1915 Saxon S2 with Schutte Scout Car
Body on Saxin Chassis. Charles Schutte were a specialised coachbuilder based in
Lanchester who bodied some of the best cars including Rolls and
Cadillac. Photo shows a "Scout Car" at presentation to
soldier contributing most to recruitment to US Forces.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1916
Opel 5'14 'Puppchen' Tourer
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) is trying to identify vehicle commented
on by Michael Schlenger, asking for identification. -- According
to the letter code on the bonnet, "KK" stands for
"Kraftfahrer-Korps" which was a a unit of the German military
in WW1 consisting of car drivers. The car on the left is from the then
Germany's largest car manufacturer who arenow PSA Peugeot-Citroen. This
is a cca 1916 Opel 5'14 'Puppchen' 1.5
Tourer, third series with wire
wheels.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1918
Oldsmobile Model 45A Touring
Another from a batch of
interesting photos received from Mike Sanders (USA)
from Montana which they have not been able to identify.
-- Lovewly
photo Radiator and emblem badge say Oldsmobile, various versions of
round top trad from, 1912 to 1923. Main identification features are
swage line on the mudguards witch are wide, height of headlamps which
is quite low, and lack of sidelights. This seem to be the 8 cylinder cca
1918 Oldsmobile Model 45A Five Passenger Touring.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1919
Spyker C1 13'39HP Tourer
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) is trying to identify vehicle commented
on by Michael Schlenger, asking for identification. -- According
to the letter code on the bonnet, "KK" stands for
"Kraftfahrer-Korps" which was a a unit of the German military
in WW1 consisting of car drivers. The car on the right with the unusual
radiator is from Holland and is a cca
1919 Spyker C1 13'39 HP Tourer 3.6-litre, four-cylinder engine, heavily
underpowered and lasted only two years.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1921
GN Vitesse Two-Seater
Lovely colour photo received from a
long-time Trojan owner and ex-SVVS Member (now 94!!) Don Williams (UK) who
was
interested to know the car make, which was photographed in
Baxterdale, Whitby, Yorkshire in 1923. -- Registration
HD 1267 was Dewsbury CBC in West Yorkshire but no dating info available
pre 1929
(when HD 3784). This has cylinder heads protruding through sides of bonnet
and appears to have staggered seats so would be a cca
1921 GN Vitesse Two-Seater
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1921
Overland Model 4 Touring
One of two interesting period photo
received from Lars Magnuson (Sweden)
who is trying to identify a family car. People
are his mother's parents. Mr Winback bought this car March 1921, new as
he is the first on the registration document which said car was a
1920 Overland 4 20/25hp. -- 'Standard
Catalogue' advises that the 20'25 was made in 1916 but that had a rounded
radiator. This one is more rectangular of 1920 shape so would be the
1921 Overland Model 4 Touring, 4 cyl
27HP.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1925
Buick Standard Six Coach
Another from a batch of
interesting photos received from Mike Sanders (USA)
from Montana which they have not been able to identify.
-- Not
much to go on on this photograph taken outside a house number 702 in a
unnamed street in relative countryside. Our Mark Dawber thinks this is
a Detroit built Buick from their
new range of slightly lower priced cars with a new 6 cylinder engine
and a slightly longer wheelbase. This two door sedan would
therefore be 1925
Buick Standard 6 Coach, Model 20.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1928
Dodge Brothers Standard Six
Another from a batch of
interesting photos received from Mike Sanders (USA)
eEspecially interested in dating
this one - we think this is in Los Angeles - the street sign reads
"W ADAMS".
-- Indeed
Los Ageles, the windmill was one of a number Van de Kamp's Dutch Bakery
sites, this one in Beverley Hills. Part of another building remains at Wilshire
Blvd/Tower Drive and is occupied by Coffee
Bean. Our Mark Dawber thinks this is a cca
1928 Dodge Brothers Standard Six Four Door Sedan.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1938
Railton Fairmile Drophead
Small faded photo received from Jeff
Jacobs (UK)
showing father Jack who had started with a barrow WW2 at local market and finished with a chain
of London car dealerships --
The is an interesting cca
1938 Railton Fairmile Drophead Coupe
by Coachcraft. Based on the American Hudson 8 car, powered by
124BHP Hudson Straight 8 engine of 4303cc and a 3-Speed gearbox, built
by Noel Macklin, late of Invicta,1933-40. Five
saloons were built for London Police. Bought by Hudson post WW2.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1949
Hotchkiss 864 Saloon
Cinema screen grab taken from an American
film "The Man from U.N.C.L.E". made in 2015, and where
cars are being investigated by IMCDB? CIA and KGB work together
to stop Criminal organization to build nuclear bomb.
-- This seems to have puzzled a
few people sugessting an Italian Alfa or similar. Actually we think it
is French and is missing a round badge half way down the centre of the
rad. We think this is most likely post WW2 Paris built
cca 1949 Hotchkiss 864 Saloon.
