IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1903 CGV Coupe Trois Quarts
Smashing photo
received from David Gumley (USA)
of car in New York requesting identification; - which he then promptly
supplied himself! The car is a cca
1903 CGV Coupe Trois Quarts (coachwork
name from horse days). Note horses in the background. CGVs were French
and imported to USA (and for a while made by) Smith and Mabley as
American CGV. Local bodies were made by J N Quinby in Rome, Newark.
David's websearch discovered rebuild of similar car underway in France.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1904 De Dion Bouton Tonneau
Two photos submitted by Jim Kaprikorn,
Beijing (China) asking
for identification of the vehicles. --
This one is relatively easy because the photo shows two distinct
pointers. One is the low level radiator which is rectangular and within
an outer casing. Only two or three cars had that. The other pointer is
the two tubes, one each side of the steering wheel. Between the two,
this suggests a cca
1904 De Dion Bouton Rear Entrance Tonneau.
Similar cars go on London to Brighton veteran
run.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1905 De Dion Bouton Two Seater
One of a number of photos sent by Mike Ganly (UK)
of motor cars owned by his GG Grandfather, George Batchelor, 1841-1930,
builder and cement manufacturer in Rochester and Strood, Kent. These
cars were purchased and used by him around 1905-08 it is
believed. -- This
one carries the registration D1777 which was issued by Kent County
Council in April 1905. The car is therefore a
cca
1905 De Dion Bouton Two Seater,
probably the 8HP. Similar to other
De Dion on this page.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1905 Panhard Levassor perhaps
One of a number of photos sent by Mike
Ganly (UK) of
motor cars owned by his GG Grandfather, George Batchelor, 1841-1930,
builder and cement manufacturer in Rochester and Strood, Kent. These
cars were purchased and used by him around 1905-08 it is believed.
-- This
photo being of very poor quality with very little to aid investigation,
so we are unable to provide a positive identification. Our Tim Harding
has suggested that this is possibly a cca
1905 Panhard Levassor Tonneau.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1909 Austro Daimler Tourer
Photo
received from John Hackworth (UK)
asking if we could identify the attached car which belonged to a
friend's grandfather in law. --
The registration has only the D showing but suggests that an L preceded
it. If so, the registration was issued by London County Council in 1909
and the car is therefore a
cca 1909 Austro Daimler Tourer, probably the Prince Heinrich.
Earlier cars were Majas named after Mercedes' younger sister. P Heinrich
cars were Porche designed, and first 'real' sports cars.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1909 Napier Landaulette
Two photos submitted by Malcolm
Smith from Aberdeen (UK) asking
if we could identify the cars which were photographed in
Edinburgh. They used to belong to his family. --
Obviously a family of some substance because both cars are of some
quality. This one is a
cca 1909 Napier Landaulette, possibly
the 40HP. One of the best of British cars, Napier was particularly
popular amongst the British aristocracy and amongst the Indian rulers
who purchased the large exotic 80 and 90HP vehicles.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1910 Standard Landaulette
Two photos submitted by Malcolm
Smith from Aberdeen (UK) asking
if we could identify the cars which were photographed in
Edinburgh. They used to belong to his family. --
Obviously a family of some substance because both cars are of some
quality. This one is a cca
1910 Standard Landaulette, probably the
30HP. Some 70 Standard cars were chosen to be the official vehicles for
the Delhi Durbar, the coronation of George V as Emperor of
India in 1911, and would have looked much as this one.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1910 REO Touring
Photo submitted by GP Gleeson (USA)
asking for confirmation of the year of the
manufacture of the car marked on the back of the photo as a Rolls. Photo
is of his great uncle is driving the car outside of Washington
DC, dated 1911. --
It is clearly not a Rolls Royce but it is a grand car none the less. The
car is cca
1910 REO Touring built by Ransom Olds
who left Oldsmobile 1904 to form REO when shareholders wanted to
discontinue making the Curved Dash. REO cars ceased 1936.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1910 New Pick Roadster
Interesting email from Wills Dobson (New
Zealand) who was asking on behalf of a relative for a valuation
in Christchurch of a 1924 Chrysler model B and a 1910
New Pick, with the engine removed. --
We regret we have no information on values in New Zeland but were
intrigued by the New Pick. This is a British car (Pick and New Pick)
made between 1898 and 1925 in Stamford, Linconshire. Initially financed
by Marquess of Exeter. Jack Pick retired to be a greengrocer in
1924, and died 1954.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1910 CID Baby
Photos received from Jean-Luc Dijon (France)
saying he is selling the car. This is a very unusual car indeed having
been manufactured in Dijon by Constructions Industrielles Dijonaises. We
know nothing about this particular car so contact Jean-Luc direct on
+33(0) 658097799. Georgano has CID made between 1912/14 by the company
which was earlier responsible for the Cotterau. The Baby
was their best known model with a 8 HP Buchet engine and a four speed
friction transmission.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1915 Ford Model T Roadster
Photo received from John Bakke (Norway) given
to him by a friend with request for identification. -- In
consultation with our colleagues in the AACA, we can advise that we
think this is an American cca 1915 Model T Ford. The body is rather nice
so may have been factory made rather than home made. Petrol tank looks
standard Ford Torpedo Roadster, larger than standard under-seat unit.
Headlights are gas as the rear tank is a Prest-o-Lite
acetylene gas tank. Electric lights in about 1915.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1920 Crossley Manchester Tourer
Photo received from Mark Taberham (UK)
who has been scanning and enlarging
small family photographs of the last century for his mother. He came
across a photo of a car being driven by his great-grandfather headed
"Drive to Dinarth Aug 1921". --
We cannot make out enough of the numberplate to try dating the car by
the registration, but can confidently say that this magnificent
vehicle is cca 1920 Crossley 25'30 with " Manchester " Tourer
bodywork. These were introduced in 1919.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1926 Sizaire Freres 4RI
Interesting photograph provided by
Powerslide (USA) requesting
identification. --
We recently had a car very similar to this at one of our meetings and
could advise that this was a French
cca 1926 Sizaire Freres 4RI. As rear
bodywork seems enclosed, it would be Sedance de Ville (brougham).
Brothers Sizaire were involved in car making from 1905 as Sizaire Naudin,
then 1913 Sizaire Berwick (financed and sold in the UK, adopting a
Rolls type radiator), and later in 1923 Sizaire Freres.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1929 Vauxhall Princeton Tourer
Photos submitted by Marcus Peacock
from Washington DC (USA) which
has the following notation on the back: "1934. Ern showing
off an Alvis." Great uncle Ernie is behind the wheel and he was a
car dealer in Glasgow, Scotland, in the 1930s; photograph was taken in
Glasgow? May be a little difficult to identify because the front of the
car is not shown. --
Our experts are generally agreed that regretfully this is not an Alvis.
We are pretty sure this is a cca
1929 Vauxhall 20'60 Princeton Tourer.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1931 Auburn Phaeton
Photo
received from John Bakke (Norway) given
to him by a friend with request for identification. -- In
consultation with our colleagues in the AACA, we can advise that we
think this is an American cca
1931 Auburn Phaeton (Convertible
Sedan). This type of body was available 1931 to 1933 with 8 cylinder or
12 cylinder engines. Auburn 'made hay' with beautiful big cars during
the early 1930s depression under E.L. Cord management (with
Duesenberg and Cord autos), but all gone by 1937.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1931 Hanomag Cabrio Limousine
Two Photos provided by Fintail on
behalf of Dr. Robert Scott Kellner (USA) of
cars which belonged to his grandfather Friedrich Kellner, an anti-Nazi
official during WWII recording Nazi crimes. His diary was recently
exhibited at the United Nations. -- Interesting
car that is German not French as suggested. It is a cca 1931/2 Hanomag
Cabrio Limousine, probably the 4'18. Hanomag made the quirky
Kommisbrot car, then followed it up with the relatively conventional 3
and 4 models.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1932 Steyr S30 Cabriolet
Two Photos provided by Fintail on
behalf of Dr. Robert Scott Kellner (USA) of
cars which belonged to his grandfather Friedrich Kellner, an
anti-Nazi official during WWII recording Nazi crimes. His diary was
recently exhibited at the United Nations. --
As the rear of the car has no boot, and as the front has Austro
Daimler type badge, I think the car is a cca 1932 Steyr S30
Cabriolet designed by Porsche during Austro Daimler-Puch merger with
Steyr, new emblem with an upright radiator.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1932 Graham Roadster
Another photo submitted by GP Gleeson (USA)
showing a car from the 1930s. The
back was dated Feruary 1935 and taken at Davis Causeway, Florida. The
girl is his cousin. Any idea on the make and year of this sporty
car. --
Our friends at the AACA agreed with our identification of this being a
cca 1932 Graham Roadster. Graham brothers purchased the old Page
Detroit company in 1927 and
became Graham Page until 1930; Graham thereafter. They made quality
cars and lasted until 1940.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1933 Citroen Rosalie
Photograph sent in by Stephen Reed
(UK) believed to be a 1936 Citroen.
It was the chaufer's car for Francis Samualson the owner of Dorman and
Long Steelworks in Middleborough. -- We
think a cca
1933 Citroen Rosalie, built 1932 to 1934, with 8,10 and 12 HP
engines, rear wheel drive. Right hand drive and having wire wheels,
could have come from Slough. Barn finds worth few hundred pounds as a
lot of money would need to be invested to restore it, which could never
be recovered (£8K).

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1938 Reanualt Novaquatre
Photo
received from Eric Bowman (Estonia) trying
to identify this car which is sitting in a garden near him, currently
under a couple of feet of snow. The garden owner believes it to be a
Citroen or Fiat but Eric thinks it is an Auto Union Wanderer or a
Russian GAZ. The front bumper is later, probably related to the engine
which is a 1960's era Russian light truck. --
Our Tim Harding has identified it as a cca
1938 Renault Novaquatre, although
Primaquatre and Celtaquatre had similar bodies.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: NOT
a 1950 Hong Qi State Limousine
Two photos submitted by Jim Kaprikorn,
Beijing (China) asking
for identification. --
This one was very difficult. Although the sign in the Beijing Museum
said Hong Qi, 'Red Flag', - it is not one. There was nothing like it made in China and nothing like it
made in the USSR. Eventually we were advised by GordonKebble in France that this
is a SKODA ! It is cca
1950 Skoda VOS "Vladni Osobni
Special", loosely translated as the 'Government
Special Car'. Please read
full details.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1956 GAZ Volga Mascot
A number of close-up photos of a car mascot
were sent in by David Sharp (UK) asking
if we can help with identifying the shiny leaping stag bonnet mascot
found in Hungary. --
I am extremely annoyed at myself that it took me some time to identify,
- and not for going for the blindingly obvious. In retrospect Hungary
should have told me East Europe/Russia. I was looking for something more
exotic. It is in fact the
bonnet mascot of a Russian Volga! I saw
thousands in the Comecon.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1912-15 Unknown Cyclecar
One of three photos sent by Mike Ganly (UK)
of motor cars owned by his GG Grandfather, George Batchelor, 1841-1930,
builder and cement manufacturer in Rochester and Strood, Kent. These
cars were purchased and used by him around 1905-08, it is
believed. --
Lovely typical early photography poses by the chaps. We have not been
able to identify the car and would welcome any input. It is a light car
or a
cyclecar,
a two seater, and seats could be staggered. Not Humberette.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1912-15 Unknown Roadster
One of three photos received from John Bakke (Norway) given
to him by a friend with request for identification, but one we have not
been able to provide a positive identification for. The chap in car
worked for Briggs bodies, but although the car is American, the body may
not have necessarily been Briggs. Our colleagues in the AACA have
looked in depth at various options including Mercer, Stutz, possibly a
Marmon or a Dorris. Possibly a road conversion of a racing car,
or specialist builder.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1908 Unknown Tourer
Lovely period photo received from Fred
Lawson (USA) who is a Member of The
Randolph County Historical Society of Winchester Indiana...He is
trying to put a date on this picture....Could we please help I. D. car
in photo???....He has been told this web site is the best place for him
to come. --
Regretfully despite his kind sentiments, we have
not been able to come up with a firm ident. Our friends at the AACA have
suggested a 1908 Oldsmobile Model A, but no confirmation.

PHOTOS NOT YET IDENTIFIED:
YOUR
H E L P IS NEEDED PLEASE !
As can be seen from our Help Pages we
normally do succeed in identifying practically all vehicle photos which
we receive. Occasionally some photos may take time and very occasionally
we get stuck. Clicking on the photo
on the right opens the page
containing some photos we are yet to crack ! Any
help would be very much appreciated.
