AND INTERNATIONAL INFORMATION ASSISTANCE
SERVICE ] ::
The SVVS Website currently
receives approximately 500,000
hits a year and the "HELP
PAGE" is internationally the most
visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians
and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to
identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification
of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as
new, and owning Vintage photo or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our
associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle -
These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries
received, and information that we have provided. While page is
being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed, cars are in year
order:

1905
Panhard Levassor 10CV
Photo from Paul Matthews (Australia)
advised as registration F 1210(?}. -- If
so, Essex County Council, and date would be end 1905. our primary
expert on veteran cars Ariejan Bos advises this photo puzzled him at
first, but Panhard
came to mind, a cca 1905 probably 8-11HP. Paul
subsequently produced another photo with numberplate showing suggesting
the first photo was the same cat but modernised with a full windscreen
and other bits years later. READ

1911
Wolseley 12'20 Tourer
Interesting photo from Paul Matthews (Australia)
of a family car beside(1903) house and stables in Stagden Cross,
north west of Chelmsford in Essex. -- Not sure of that
family connection just yet!!! The family rumour is that the car is a
13-seat Wolseley!! Thanks for any help you can dig up!!
-- Registration H 9232 was issued by Essex County Council which changed
registration letters to HX in July 1912, so cannot be later. Car is
indeed a cca 1911 Wolseley 12'20 Tourer.

Photographer's Prop Car
Another photo from our Forums Sleuth, Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) from Forum of unidentified old vehicle photographed in
Ireland in1909. -- The car is against a painted
background so is in a photographers studio. The steering wheel is on
the wrong side for UK so perhaps photo needs to be flipped (click on
photo). Very distinctive radiator but as car is a
'prop' maybe made by studio to look
modern. Resemblance to early NAG and in some respects resemblance to
early American air-cooled.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1924
Rover 9 Tourer
Photos received from John Watson (UK) of
car owned by Grandfather. -- Registration EK 4260
was issued by Wigan County Borough Council in 1924. The car looks
smallish but sturdy so was a relatively expensive one. The giveaway for
the make is the squarish notch in the bottom of the radiator header
tank, and the giveaway for the model is the big number 9 on the badge.
So it is a 1924
Rover 9 Tourer, with a 1074 cc 20 bhp
four-cyl engine and 3 speed gearbox. Popular, 13,000 made,

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1966
Checker Aerobus A12W
Interesting photo om John Bath (UK) searching
Evans (Wimbledon) Ltd, the then UK Importers. --
I remember Evans. Different photo shows car back so is a cca
1966 Checker Aerobus A12W 12 seater Estate
with a Chevrolet 5.37L six. Registered London CC 1966. "John
Gee-Turner removes a parking ticket from the windscreen of his
eight-door Checker Aerobus; photo 1st Feb 1966". Too long for
single bay! Aerobus name relates to use in US as a transporter of
people to airports from hotels.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1925
Ford Model T Truck
Another photo from our regular Alun Pugh (UK).
-- NP 6116 is an Essex CC reg of 1926. 'Essex' is
a county adjacent to NE London incorporating Epping Forrest west,
Southend-on-Sea south, Colchester east, and almost to Cambridge North.
Flatbed truck of a smaller size having solid rear tyres, rear and front
suspension of the transverse spring type, side lamps oil and mains
electric. All this points to this being a car based cca
1925 Model T Truck rather than the
bigger TT based Dropside type.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1906
Star 16HP Tourer
Another photo from our Forums Sleuth, Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) from Forum of unidentified old vehicle photographed in
New Zealand. -- Our Star expert Neale Lawson
advises that the car with hood up is a larger
cca 1906/7 Star 16HP or 20HP from the
brass tank partially visible behind the front mudguard. The larger
models used an exhaust pressurised lubrication system at this time with
the oil reservoir mounted on the either side of the chassis so is not
entirely reliable ID.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1906
Star 12HP Tourer
Another photo from our Forums Sleuth, Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) of vehicle photographed in New Zealand. --
Our Star expert Neale Lawson advises this is an early cca
1906/7 Star 12h.p. as it has 3/4
elliptic front springs and square corners to the bottom of the
radiator. The 1905/6 14h.p. had the same arrangement, but the contact
maker was fitted to the dashboard. Although 3/4 elliptic springs were
supposed to be standard, many cars had solid dumb irons riveted/bolted to chassis.

1900 Tricar/Forecar
Couple of puzzling photos Received from Phil Smart (UK) of cars
owned by same family. == Photo of a tricar
in Wollaston with two saddles, shallow engine nothing nothing
above tank level, horizontal twin? Our Chas Moody suggested 'Quadrant'
going from shape of tank only. Martin Shelley advises it is not an
obvious make at first glance. Many tricars were built specifically to
order, and very have survived beyond arliest years, so they are almost
always hard to recognise. NEED HELP PLEASE

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1900
Mayfair Voiturette
Couple of puzzling photos Received from Phil Smart (UK) of cars
owned by same family. One says 1916 but that might not be
correct. == Our veterans expert Ariejan Bos
advises the two-seater is probably a 1900 Mayfair Voiturette, sold by
Sports Motor Car Co, London. which was in fact a licensed Ateliers
Linon car from Ensival verviers, Belgium. There was another marginally
different Linon based product also in UK, the Hutton, made by JR Hutton
of in Yorkshire. Also a similar Belgian Mans.

Sunbeam 30HP 6 Cyl Chassis
Interesting Photo received from Paul Sutton-King
(UK) asking if it would be possible to identify car on UK
postcard. Short name on wheel hub. The engine block looks to be cast in
two blocks of three but there are 12 plug leads? --
Our veterans expert Ariejan Bos advises this is the
Sunbeam factory, but some photo distortion. These are 1912 30hp 6 cyl. Chassis as below where the
engine shown is almost identical, having the hand lever combination
with one with grip, one with knob.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1908
Hotchkiss Model T Tourer 16'20HP
Another from our Forums Sleuth, Mark Dawber (New
Zealand), from a forum of old photos asking for information on
the make of vehicle photographed at Morieux Church. --
Morieux is a coastal village in Brittany in northwestern France not far
from Saint Malo and British Isalmnd of Jersey. The car is by an
American Armaments maker who settled in France with a two-cannon badge,
this car being a cca 1908 Hotchkiss Model T Tourer 16'20HP. Photos of

1928
Dixi DA-2 3'15 Roadster
Another Interesting photo from one of our regulars Adrian Pascu-Tulbure
of 1961 Sibu Romania, of Saxon
Transylvania. -- Looks like a British Austin
Seven so is more likely to be a German Automobilwerk Eisenbach - Dixi,
who purchased an Austin licence 1927, and first small car was a Dixi
DA-1 3'15. Dixi was bought by BMW to enter car making, who
developed this into a sportier BMW-Dixi
DA-2 3'15 also available as a
Two-seater Roadster with 3 banks of horizontal louvres just like this.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1913
Lorraine Dietrich Tourer
Another Interesting photo from one of our regulars Joao Ferreira
(Portugal) of a car group including Horacio Paz dos Reis. Cotin?==
Horacio Paz dos Reis was owner of a successful florist's shop in Porto,
but also an amateur filmmaker taking many local activities and
exhibiting imported films. After a technically bad show in Brazil 1897
he returned to flowers. Our Ariejan Bos advises the car is a French
cca 1913 Lorraine Dietrich Tourer,
bonnet size suggesting 18'20 HP Model.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1907 Maudslay 25'30 Lorry
Another from our Forums Sleuth, Mark Dawber (New
Zealand), fold
photos asking for information on the make of vehicle registered
Kirkaldie 1920. French Delaunay Belleville converted lorry?
- -
Reversed rad hoops, it is actually a
British Coventry made 1920 London registered cca
1907 Maudslay 25'30 car, from pre-war
spindly dumbirons, longish bonnet and bigger rad diameter, converted
post WW1 to a lorry, or using up pre-war stock of cars, being
registered as post war lorries.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1901
De Dion Bouton 4.5CV Tonneau
Another from our Forums Sleuth, Mark Dawber (New
Zealand), fold
photos asking for information on the make of vehicle? Possible De Dion
Bouton but Mark has doubts. -- Initial research
advises that chap in car is the great Italian Opera Composer Giacomo
Puccini, and further research from a number of sources agrees that this
is his first car, advised as a
1901 De Dion Bouton 5CV Tonneau. And
this is only a start in the confusion and errors about his early
cars. READ

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1909
Stevens-Duryea 24HP Limousine
On our Unidentified Cars Help Page 1 from
2005 we have a Photo which we have not been able to identify. The
visible radiator and bonnet as well as the type of non-split wheels
used suggested a European car.
-- Regular contributor Varun Coutinho
thinks this is a cca
1909 Stevens-Duryea 24HP Model X Limousine.
Stevens-Duryea was an American manufacturer from Chickopee Falls making
innovative and luxury cars from 1901 to 1927 to Duryea Design and
Stephens 'Arms & Tool' money

1920s Duckback Racer
Another possible library photo from one of our regulars Joao Ferreira
(Portugal) of a an interesting modified racer. ==
We are generally not able to help with 'specials' and with racing cars
because these are normally one-off vehicles which are built for a specific
race or race series series and do not necessarily have recognizable features,
even the radiators, that were
on everyday cars. Thisone has Unusual double ducksback body with double
rear springs.
