receives approximately 500,000
hits a year and the "HELP
PAGE" is internationally the most
visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians
and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to
identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification
of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as
new, and owning Vintage photo or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our
associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle -

Panhard Levasso 4HP
Cinema screen grab taken from the French film "Le
mystère de la chambre jaune" (the mystery of the yellow room}
made in 1965 where cars are being investigated by IMCDB. Story about a
girl attacked in a sealed bedroom. -- Seems
a remake of as 1913 film of same name. Odd grainy fooitage foir 1965?
Veery early car advised by our Ariejan Bois as being a cca
1895 Panhard Levassor which would have
been a 4HP having two-seater bodywork which waS then called 'Charette
Anglaise".

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1903
Renault 8CV Two Seater
Cinema screen grab taken from the French film "Le
mystère de la chambre jaune" (the mystery of the yellow room}
made in 1965 where cars are being investigated by IMCDB. Story about a
girl attacked in a sealed bedroom. -- Seems
a remake of as 1913 film of same name. Sideways mounted radiators. The
car seems French and may well have been modified in various ways since
manufacture. Originally it was probably a
cca 1903 Renault Two Seater,
either the 6 CV or the 8 CV.

Renault XB Limousine

a remake of as 1913 film of same name. Bulkhead mounted square-edged
radiator and quick release wire wheels. The car seems French. It has
quite a shortish bonnet which suggests this is a cca 1908
Renault Model XB Open-drive Limousine.

Darracq Rear Entrance Tonneau
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New Zealand)
from
a forum of old photos asking for identification. -- Photo
showing a small ironmongers shop in Quettehou in France, a small town
on the coast of the Channel on the Chgerbourg peninsula, nearby to
Jersey and Guernsey. Semms they were dealers of Gladiator bicycles
originated by Alexandre Darracq and later part of the Clement-Gladiator
company. The car seems a modified
cca 1903 Darracq Rear Entrance Tonneau,

(UK) author encyclopedia
'Car Number Classics' on histories of original cars/owners of first
registrations in UK. -- Photo
is of 1904 visit of Alake of Abeokuta, now a part of Nigeria, to UK to
meet Edward VII. The Alake was treated with great dignity and was
impressed by the cars used during the tour of UK, including a
c1903 Daimler 14HP
Tonnea owned by Sir
Alfred Jones, then President of Liverpool Board of Trade.

Lovely photo received from our Member and auto historian Nicholas Young
(UK) author encyclopedia
'Car Number Classics' on histories of original
cars/owners of first registrations in UK.--This
photo relates to the visit of Alake of Abeokuta, now part of Nigeria,
in 1904 to UK to meet Edward VII. The Alake was fascinated by the cars
used during his tour of the UK. The car in the photo was a
cca
1904 Gladiator 16HP Surrey owned by
Georgew Astley, who was the 20th Baron Hastings.

Reichard Brasier 16hp Tonneau
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New Zealand)
from
a forum of old photos asking for identification. Is it a Mors with
modified front? --
Early French car in Bordeaux. Modified it is indeed having a much later
wrap-round scuttle being used as an advertising board for the business
of servicing. Also noticeable is a spare wheel bolted to the right
front, which is presumably flat. This is a later-upgraded cca 1905
Reichard Brasier 16hp 2.4L Side Entrance Tonneau,

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1906
JP 18'24 Double Phaeton
Distorted photo-of-photo received from Rick Simpson (UK) of
grandparents c1906, possibly in Eastbourne. -- Reg
F1428 is Essex CC1905. Unusual radiator which our Ariejan Bos recognized
as a "JP" sold in the UK by the Gracile Motor
Company, made in France by Usines Prunel under J Prunello part of
the company. This is a cca
1906 JP 18'24 Double Phaeton owned by
E H Richards of Manor Park, E., which was used by him to win the Essex
Hill Climb for a couple of years running.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1910 Darracq 14'16
Tourer
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New Zealand)
from
a forum of old photos asking for identification. Is it a Darracq? --
Yes. Formed by Alexabdre Darracq 1896 after selling Gladiator Cycle Co,
then sold to UK as A Darracq & Co. He continued to run the French
factory end, but asked to retire 1910. Darracq Co bought Clement Talbot
1919, then Sunbeam 1920, became Sunbean-Talbot-Darracq Ltd, closed
down1936. This car is a French
cca 1910 Darracq 14'16 Tourer.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1912 Delage Model R Tourer
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New Zealand)
from
a forum of old photos asking for identification. Looks like a Delage,
what model? -- Three filler caps on
tscuttle which limits likely makes and indeed confirms this is a Delage
founded in 1905 by Louis Delage at Levallois-Perret, Paris; acquired by
Delahaye 1935 and closed 1953. Many similar models differing in engine
size. This seems to be a cca 1912 Delage Model R
Tourer, with a 1452
Ballot four cylinder 14CV.

Ford Model T Touring

Film is about three women with different backgrounds about to give
hospital birth-- The
car on the left is American with no dumbirons visible so therefore has
to have a transverse front spring, also retangular not rounded bonnet,
with no bill to front mudguard, and having a painted windscreen
surround, all suggesting a cca
1913 Ford Model T Touring.

Scania Vabis Type I Phaetoin

Film -- The
film is Swedish so not surprising to find albeit an unusual Swedish
car, aa cca
1914 Scania Vabis Type I Phaeton, a
car featured on Wikimedia typical for the model. Formed in 1911 from
the merger of Södertälje-based Vabis 1891, and Malmö-based
Maskinfabriks-aktiebolaget Scania founded 1900. Became SAAB, Now
Volkswagen.

Benz 8'20 Doppelphaeton

Film is about three women with different backgrounds about to give

car on right is German, has right hand drive, with a spitzkuhler rad,
and has gas generator on the running board but electric lights? This is
a cca
1914 Benz 8'20 Doppelphaeton. Research
suggests this is the very car that is featured on Wikimedia typical for
the model.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1920 Citroen Model A Torpedo
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New Zealand)
from
a forum of old photos asking for identification from a series of
postcards depicting local French establishments.
-- Reliably informed by French member
Michel Gosset that they were"Supplies for Automobiles and
Stationary Engines" which was in Dijon, midwest France. The car is
an early
cca 1920 Citroen Model A Torpedo which seems in relatively
good condition so the photo was probably taken at about that time.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1928
Citroen B14 & 1924 Citroen B10
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New Zealand)
from
a forum of old photos asking for identification from a series of
postcards depicting local French establishments.
-- This is a Driving School, appropriately over a Bar, a part of the
postcard from Joan of Arc, Orleans. Both cars seem to be Citroens. The
car on the left seems to be a cca 1928 Citroen B14 Cabriolet (or
possibly Faux Cabriolet) and the interesting car on right is an older cca
1924 Citroen B10 Saloon.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1923
Citroen 5CV Trefle
Cinema screen grab taken from
Anglo-American film "Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore
made in 2022 where cars are being investigated by IMCDB. Screenplay by
J K Rowling and part of the fantasy series in weird-land. Jonny Depp
was asked to resign after few scenes in London due then legal court
cases but had multi-million contract for payment regardless.
-- French car
which has a pointed tail, seat at rear, rounded mudguards, so is a cca
1923 Citroen 5CV Trefle.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1924
Model C Citroen 5CV
As a result of the photo received from Mark Dawber above, one of number
postcards depicting local French garages, our French Member
Michel Gosset sent another postcard depicting same 'Garage Pichard'. --
Garage Pichard was in Tours, a university
town in in central France in the Loire valley, not far from Le Mans.
Seems a relatively prosperous establishment, these according to Michel
are all Model C Citroen 5CVs (from mudguards) being of differing years
of manufacture, 1922-26.

Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New Zealand)
from
a forum of old photos asking for identification. --
This is from a series of postcards
depicting local French garages. - Tours is university town
central France, Loire valley, not far from Le Mans. Seems a relatively
prosperous establishment with a cca 1924 Citroen Model B10 Saloon on
the left (no visible petrol filler cap on the scuttle) and its smaller
predecessor, a
cca 1920 B2 Four Seater Torpedo
on the right.

Fiat 505 Torpedo

made 1971 to 1974 where the cars are being investigated by IMCDB. The
Series was based on Maurice Leblanc's gentleman master thief Arsène
Lupin who was featured in over 50 stories starting in 1905.-- The
car is Italian, medium sized bodywork tapering rectangularish radiator,
external handles and hinges, door cap, and lamp type points to a
cca
1919 Fiat 505 Torpedo. 30,000 vehicles made between 1919 and25. 2298cc
four.

Series was based on Maurice Leblanc's gentleman master thief Arsène
Lupin who was featured in over 50 stories starting in 1905.--
Ssuggested as a Fiat, does have some
features of the 109, but had a scutte filler cap, quite different rad/bonnet/body
and had rear suicide door, all of which point to a French cca
1929 Coirre La Licorne HO2 Trainon , a
5CV raded car,

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1932
Steyr Type 45 Taxameter
Cinema screen grab from one of the French

investigated by IMCDB. Series based on Maurice Leblanc's gentleman
master thief Arsène Lupin since 1905. --
Difficult identification as its general
appearance of low and squat did not fit mainstream European car makes.
Searches included the Czech Tatra but eventually identified as coming
from Austria but designed by Hans Ledwinka, ex Tatra, as a ca1932
Steyr 45 Taxameter.

Renault Vivaquatrre Cabriolet

Lupin since 1905.-- - Relatively
difficult to identify as it had the looks of a Horch but is actually
French. What also confuses is that it seems to be a Cabriolet which
also has a spare wheel. Renault made a number of similar vehicles on
the Thirties and this is likely a cca
1932 Renault Vivaquatrre

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1937
Talbot 105 Sports Saloon
Lovely photo received from Richard Newman (UK) taken 1956 of car father
called 'the Talbot' bought as a caravan tower, not always the case. --
This is from the Resch era of the 1930s
when of Talbots were undergoing a racing renaissance before Rootes
closed them. No registration visible to aid dating but this seems the
longer wheelbase cca
1937 Talbot 105 Sports Saloon with the
airflow type body which would have had a 3L Six engine but suffering
from the Rootes takeover.

Delage D6-70 Panoramique

searched by IMCDB. --
As this was a nightime scene we thought
this was a Talbot Darracq T26, but were concerned about the full body
stripe. Subsequently advised that this is also a French car but the
earlier
1937 Delage D6-70 JELM bodied by Paris based Letourneur &
Marchand also known as the Coupe Panoramique. L & M were
then main coachwork suppliers to Delage.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1946
Railton 8 DHC Radford
Cinema screen grab taken from the British Film 'Mine Own
Executioner, made in 1947 where cars are being investigated by IMCDB.
Story about husband not wanting to go to a psychiatrist.
-- Ribbed grille, six studs on bonnet,
plain scuttle, spare wheel and had a noticable four hinge door.
Definitive answer from Railton Owners that this is one of two post war
cars built in 1946 on 1937 chassis, powered by Hudson straight eight
4.6 engine, D H C body by Harold
Radford one USA, one on road UK.
