:: [ SVVS Summer Picnic, Betchworth - August 2007 ] ::

The Great SVVS Summer Picnic was held in a field at Royce Motors in Betchworth. The day started off black and gloomy making all wonder if it would rain. Then it cheered up, so we all decided to come. The Mohaceks however took no chances so took a gazebo. Some took only brollies. It was fine at first but then bucketed down a couple of times with a vengeance. Notwithstanding, the Cuss-es manned the fine barbie of hotdogs and as usual the club also provided a glass of plonk. Royce Motors proved to be an excellent choice for this year's picnic venue and about 50 vintage and classic cars brought their owners and families to a very successful event. Some fine hot dogs were provided by Peggy and Chris and, much to everyone's surprise, Clive was observed practising his strictly limited culinary skills, suitably supervised by Hilary. Jean and Bob dispensed plenty of half decent plonk that was much enjoyed by all while Jacquie and Derek devoted their time to almost anything that needed to be done. The result was a most enjoyable picnic. However, after a brief, light shower early in the proceedings, a little while later, while the assembled folks were enjoying their vittles, the heavens opened up and much good food was dampened and the assorted drinks diluted. One sensible party had taken the precaution of bringing a gazebo and were able to enjoy their lunch in comparative comfort. Although the planned driving tests with an electric wheelchair had to be abandoned because the grass became too wet, many enjoyed a stroll through Royce Motors' showroom and workshop, the former housing a couple of dozen immaculate Rolls Royces and Bentleys and the latter, equipped with six car lifts, was impressive in its almost clinically clean appearance while visitors' queries were answered by a very helpful Royce worker. Among the members' cars were no less than 7 Rileys, 5 Bentleys and a Rolls Royce and, although some of the owners had to make a dash to erect hoods and tonneaux when the rain came, others sat comfortably in their saloon cars. Although many stayed well into the afternoon, several less stalwart members, including your scribe, departed early for drier places.
