This is a new venue we are trying out this year, one which is
located at the northern perimeter of our catchment area. It is still quite early
on in the year so the weather was iffy. Forecast was doom and gloom promising
wet, storms and showers, but it started out quite sunny and clear. As I got to the car
park of the venue the roads had been dry and the sky was blue. By the time I got
parked and out of the car the sky was dismally grey and it was deluging and
hailing great chunks of ice. I was soaked before I managed to get back to the
car; which then immediately steamed all the windows!!
The Sportsman is an eatery type of pub built on the site of a historic hunting
lodge believed used by Henry VIII while out hunting. The pub is nearly impossible to
find being at the end of a road leading to nowhere! The nowhere then becomes the
Downs and is therefore very popular with walkers, who stop here to eat on the
way. Hence the pub was packed and the carpark to overflowing so much so one of
out lot drove off in a huff at not being able to park! Notwithstanding, we had a relatively reasonable turnout of
about 20 vehicles, of which 15 were proper cars.
