Skimmington
Castle, Reigate
Report by Malcolm Ward
It
would appear that the suggested earlier start time of 6pm for our evening
outdoor meetings is becoming ever more popular. I arrived at the proposed
time to find the car park already quite crowded. Further vehicles arrived
before I had even opened my car door! I grabbed my camera to start
recording the early arrivals for the magazine.
Vehicles continued to arrive filling the car park beyond its legitimate
capacity ...not an uncommon occurrence at this venue. Amazingly the
weather was dry and warm, so most members were happy to socialise in the
car park.
Several prospective new members arrived during the evening, and I heard
what I often hear at our outdoor gatherings: "What an incredible
variety of vehicles". Okay, there were no buses or traction engines,
but the variety of makes and ages of cars on display is always quite
wondrous. According to Chas's magazine distribution list, ages ranged from
Michael's 1913 Renault to our President's 2006 Jaguar XJR. When it comes
to makes and models, I'll let my photos describe the scene.
Vehicles of note were two 1944 Jeeps, an MG TA Airline Coupe that is a new
creation based on (one of) the only (two) surviving example(s). There was
a 'well used' race prepared Triumph TR6 that had been driven hard for
300,000 miles on the same engine! A gas-powered RR Shadow, an HRG, a newly
restored 'Chain Gang' Frazer Nash and even a pristine example of a Vanden
Plas Metro …find another!
We had approximately 50 'proper' vehicles at Skimmington, and many more if
you include the 'interesting' moderns. A great evening enjoyed by all, I'm
sure. Thanks everyone for coming.
