Our visit to the Inn-on-Pond in Nutfield on the 11th of September had its usual low turnout which suggests that either the date or the place is not attractive to our Members. It is effectively the first of the Autumn Sunday lunchtime meetings which could easily get forgotten. However this year we had the additional grief of the place being full of cars and also being overrun by a swarm of very noisy and buzzy Subarus. We were told that no tables were available for lunch until after 2 o’clock and one of the Members was apparently given the indication that we were taking up places in the car park which would be could have been used by their regular clients. When I spoke later to a very harassed Manageress she indicated that nobody had told her that we were coming, nobody had booked any tables and yes, that our members had got upset and ‘stormed off’ when no tables could be found. The few of our Members who came had indeed left, some to find alternative pubs and others to go home. Bearing in mind that we have been coming to this pub at this time regularly for a large number of years, I was most surprised to get this kind of reaction. Guess perhaps we have to find a new pub for this date ; with space and grace!
